How Do We Define Heroism?
What is about a person that makes them a hero in our eyes ? Of course our children often see us as heroes, but that is a conditioned response from our nurturing them and making them feel safe. We've all heard of fire fighters running into burning buildings to save complete strangers and often giving their own lives, or brave police officers being killed in the line of duty while protecting you and me. And then of course there's the brave soldiers, many of them still in their teens , putting their lives on the line while protecting our freedom and the freedom of others. Whether we believe in the cause that have taken so many young lives or not, the point is they gave their all, in an effort to best secure the freedom and safety of their families and the rest of the country, because they believed they were fighting for a just cause. These are heroes who knew the dangers that they were up against, and g-d bless them all.
What gives a person the courage to put the fate of another human being ahead of their own welfare? People who woke up and had no plans on putting out a fire, chasing criminals, or being shot at in some far away country. Someone just going about their way, their main concern on that day was to go through their daily routine, get in their car, fasten their seat belt for safety, and head out that day with their main concern being to provide for their family and them selves.
Then suddenly they find themselves in a predicament that they could have never imagined when they left their home that day. They new someone had to do something and do it fast. But who? " Surely this called for someone who was trained for this". But without another thought, they sprung into action, the life of another in danger and giving very little weight to ones own life. That's a hero, a person without knowledge or training, or any idea they would have this event unfold before them when they awoke that morning.
Do you have a hero that you would like to share with us? They don't have to be someone who put their life on the line, but could be someone who went above and beyond what was expected of them, in order to help another. If so, please Email me at bocaboyjay@aol.com with your story and I'll publish it on this site and recognize them as TRUE HEROES.
